What each Monster Hunter Outlanders weapon does
S tier: Top picks

Heavy Bowgun
The Fated Adventurer's strongest weapon. It reaches its top damage with very little effort, from range, and stuns monsters better than the hammer does. Each bowgun fires its own element on every shot, so bring the one that matches the monster's weakness.

Bow
A higher damage ceiling than the heavy bowgun, but you have to hold the right distance for spread and power shots to reach it. Being ranged, it keeps hitting while melee weapons are still chasing the monster.
A tier: Strong

Dual Blades
The best melee weapon. On paper it out-damages the heavy bowgun, and element matters a lot in Outlanders, but in a real hunt you lose damage chasing the monster, so it lands below the two ranged weapons.

Great Sword
Very safe for a great sword: you can tackle from a standstill or straight out of a slash, and True Charged Slash has full Super Armor, so a hit doesn't stop the swing. Slower than dual blades and a little behind on damage.

Long Sword
Damage close to the great sword's, but it leans on counters to fill its Spirit Gauge. Solo that works well, since the monster stays on you rather than your adventurers, and it gets harder in multiplayer endgame hunts where the monster may be chasing someone else.
B tier: Solid

Lance
The safest weapon, with Power Guard and counters, and easy to play: Leaping Thrust covers ground quickly, and plain thrust strings do respectable damage. Its damage is near the bottom, and if you want an evade lance, Ouyang Varen plays that way.

Hammer
Its new jumping smash has no Super Armor, so a hit can knock you out of it, unlike the great sword's charged slash. Damage sits around the lance's, and the heavy bowgun stuns monsters better.
Ranks the weapons the Fated Adventurer, your own character, can use: the only adventurer who can switch weapon, class and element, with no damage penalty for any element. Placed on how they played in the third closed beta: the damage each can reach, and how easily you reach it in a real hunt. Charge Blade arrives at launch and goes on the list once it's out.
What each Monster Hunter Outlanders adventurer does
S tier: Top picks
FreyaA disruptor with damage close to the assault adventurers'. She raises the squad's fire damage and her ultimate always topples the monster. Getting the most out of her means staying in to spin with no Super Armor, so she's harder to play well than Midori.
HazeA thunder dual blades support you earn from the guild shop instead of recruiting. When the main adventurer's Burst Skill lands she follows up, charging the squad's ultimates and raising its affinity, and her ultimate raises the squad's elemental crit damage, by another 25% once she's landed 12 hits. Both buffs help any damage dealer, whatever their element.
LukaThe strongest damage dealer in the game so far, and he does it from range. His Thunder Coating arrows only beat a Fated Adventurer on a bow or heavy bowgun when the monster is weak to thunder. The pre-launch build gave Arc Slash a flip that makes the reposition a little slower, and nothing else changed, so he stays on top.
MadelynThe best general buffer you can start with: her ultimate heals the squad and raises its damage, whatever element you're using. She's an SR, so she's cheap to max, and she beats Arkaya until he gets his first duplicate.
MidoriA fire long sword with a dodge-and-counter style and a lot of room to get better at. On monsters weak to fire she out-damages the Fated Adventurer on any weapon. Elsewhere she falls behind, and as a melee fighter she's less steady than Luka.
PepperS tier in the second closed beta, when she could stay in the air for most of a hunt. The nerfs since then cut her personal damage, but she still fires and parries from the air, her affinity buff helps any squad, and her ultimate paralyzes the monster.
A tier: Strong
ArkayaAn SSR support who buffs the squad's affinity and gives it a shield, but without a duplicate his buff is weaker than Madelyn's. His first duplicate adds 12% skill damage and puts him at the top of the list.
KeresA dual blades disruptor whose hits on weak points do far more damage, and who makes the monster take more dragon damage while raising the squad's. Demon Mode keeps her from being knocked back, so she can stay on a weak point once she finds it.
LuxheartA free thunder great sword disruptor. His ultimate flashes the monster and holds three charges, two of them ready when the hunt starts, so he can stop a monster in the first seconds of a fight. His combos are short and simple, which makes him easy to play well.
RhodesThe only hammer adventurer, and an ice one. His charged attacks build energy, and some of his moves spend it on an explosion that does a lot of damage. His swings also cover a wide area.
B tier: Solid
Ouyang VarenAn evade lancer with the lowest damage of the assault adventurers, but a great squad member. His ultimate puts him in front of you to block an attack, roars included, and his counter staggers the monster, with all three charges ready when the hunt starts. Your main damage dealer with Madelyn and Ouyang Varen is the easiest squad to run, and he's the one to swap for Pyro or Midori when you want more damage.
PyroA great sword who charges through hits with Super Armor and hits back harder after taking one, which puts him above a Fated Adventurer's great sword. He's tied to one element, and some matchups are bad: Great Girros paralyzes him straight through the Super Armor.
RayaHer ultimate sets pitfall traps and she raises the squad's fire damage, so she's the disruptor to bring when Midori is doing your damage. Traps don't work on every monster or on any Elder Dragon, and other disruptors control the monster without that limit.
RyunosukeA free fire long sword support who eats in certain stances to build energy, and hits much harder with his Spirit Blade attacks once he's Well-fed. His squad buff only raises fire damage and his ultimate cleanses, so he belongs next to Midori.
How this list is made
Ranked at the global launch on how each adventurer plays: the damage they do when you play them, and what they add to a squad as a party member through buffs, shields and crowd control.
